Celebrating Learning Partners Return

On January 20, the Intergenerational Schools community celebrated the return of Learning Partners to all three school buildings. During the first half of the 2021-2022 school year, the Learning Partners program continued virtually, further establishing and restoring connections between students and volunteers over Zoom. But now, Intergenerational Schools’ dedicated adult volunteers who have shared their time and talent to be part of transforming the school experience for students, were able to walk back into each school.
Students in Ms. de Leon’s Beginning Stage (GLE K-2) class were so excited to select a book of their choice from their book box to read with our devoted volunteer, Ms. Vicki. “It was my first time and it felt good to read together,” expressed a student after her reading time with her new learning partner. Ms. Vicki has volunteered for years but was thrilled to be able to have the experience of flipping through the pages together again.
“I enjoy working with children and being involved with the community. I started reading at an early age and think it is so important. When you read, you can be any person you want to be through using your imagination.”
Vicki Jackson, Learning Partner at The Intergenerational School
Intergenerational Schools’ staff and teachers ensure the wellbeing and success of each student, and many know the power of a volunteer’s presence in the classroom. “Learning Partners are such a great part of our Intergens community. Having another adult and member of the community come in to encourage and support students in their learning is amazing. It allows for a great break in the day for students and for them to be able to show off their reading skills to someone new which they always enjoy,” said Ms. de Leon.
As Learning Partners return to the schools, we are inspired by the continued academic growth of each student supported by our multigenerational community. The importance of this program and the commitment of each volunteer reflects the collaborative effort to connect, create, and guide a multigenerational community of lifelong learners and spirited citizens as we strive for academic excellence.
