Near West Intergenerational School will host resident artist Megan Young through the Integrating Visual Arts in Reading and Writing Instruction program. This 18-week engagement will intertwine visual arts pedagogy with reading and writing classroom instruction for Developing and Refining stage (grades 3 -6) students. The residency will culminate in a public Art Exhibition hosted by a community organization.
Artist in Resident Megan Young
Megan Young is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Cleveland (OH). Her work advocates for a joyful, often playful interaction with art and everyday objects. She makes sculptures and installations with found objects, weavings, pottery, paintings, drawings, prints, poems, and essays.
“As a teacher, I am eager to impart knowledge and enthusiasm for the arts and give students the resources they need to realize their creative potential.” ~ Megan Young
An Intergenerational Learning Experience
This program takes a multidisciplinary and intergenerational approach to education. Primarily working with Near West's Art Teacher, Nathan Manthey, Megan will support teachers in incorporating visual arts into their classroom and working with students to express their ideas through mixed media, weaving, and ceramics projects.
The students’ final project will be an intergenerational experience. Ms. Young will guide teachers, students, and volunteers to create an Art Exhibition and Maker's Day program. Students will work with their multi-age class and adult Learning Partners to develop projects in preparation for the exhibit. Students will have the opportunity to present their art to the school and a greater public audience.
Through this powerful and engaging experience, students will know that their ideas are valued and have a place in the world.
